What is Holistic Health?
HAVE YOU NOTICED YOU ARE HEARING THE WORD “HOLISTIC” BEING THROWN AROUND A LOT LATELY?
I have noticed that it has become a trendy term to describe so many different things. I read about creating a holistic capsule wardrobe the other day, feeding your dog holistically and having a holistic skincare regimen. Each to their own but in this context we are going to use it to describe something deeper than that, the SELF.
I first heard the word HOLISTIC almost 30 years ago in a Lifespan Development class I was taking in College. It struck a chord with me and has been a going concern of mine ever since. I learned that throughout people’s lives, three things seem to remain true. We are made up of body, mind and spirit. As sentient beings on this planet, we are multifaceted and if we can care for this trinity of ourselves, we will be more fulfilled. I believe that if we tend to our BODY, MIND AND HEART, we can transcend and truly connect with SOUL.
I created a pamphlet in my college computers class, so long ago, for “The Healing Haven Holistic Wellness Centre”. I found this approach to working with people thoroughly resonated with me (vibration is life). It just seemed to make sense that all of these parts of ourselves need to be understood and nurtured if we are going to be fully self-actualized.
HAVE YOU BEEN CONFUSED ABOUT WHAT THE TERM “HOLISTIC HEALTH” REALLY MEANS?
The word Holistic has been used to describe medicine, therapies and lately so many other things. The definition of holistic is seeing the whole as the sum of its parts. Recognizing that many pieces are working together inside complex systems. Understanding how well each of the components are working, determines how well the whole functions. These are my words of course but I hope you get the jest of what I am getting at. In the context of this blog, Holistic Health will be used to describe the wellness of the whole SELF- BODY, MIND, HEART AND SOUL
How our holistic self interacts with others and the world around us is further broken down into another system. That system is comprised of 8 pillars. Since I started being interested in holistic health, so long ago, some of those pillars have been added or there have been different names given but the essentials are still the same. The pillars of holistic health are intellectual, emotional, spiritual, physical, social, environmental, financial and nutritional. I will explore them all in my next post.
With this blog, I plan to share information, guide practices and explore products that promote holistic wellness. I am a Holistic Transformational Coach but am also on my own healing journey and constantly learning new things. I hope we can create a community of like minded individuals, share experiences and support one another along the path to living a more balanced and content life.
